Hole 1: Par 4, 350 metres |
| |
There
are easier starting holes than this one! A creek in front of
the tee, water all the way along the left side of a narrow
fairway that slopes to the water and a huge clump of 12 metre
high bamboo 200 metres out from the tee on the right, make it
a big challenge.
It's important to start
your round well, so when confronted by such a difficult starting
hole you should recall the percentages of fairways you hit with
say, the 3 wood, driver, and 2 or 3 iron. If you hit only 50-60%
of fairways with your driver and draw or hook the ball, leave
your driver in the bag here and choose a 3 wood or low iron.
Sacrifice distance for accuracy on such difficult holes - many
pros choose an iron to be on the safe side as they hit so long
anyway. This is no guarantee of a good shot, but still it's a good
way of minimising the risks of starting the round badly. |

This Graham Marsh designed course was one of the first of the new Championship Courses to be built on the Gold Coast and was among the first residential golf communities. While Tiger Woods was in nappies many famous golfers walked its fairways in some big Tournaments such as Curtis Strange, Greg Norman, Mike Colandro, Brett Ogle, Roger Davis, Peter Senior to name a few.
This 6319 metre layout has 14 holes where water is a feature as well as 82 bunkers and tiered greens. The most talked about hole is the 18th par 5 dogleg right of over 550 metres where you need to clear the water some 220 metres away if you want to go for the green for 2 but you still need to clear the water across the front of the green. The smart play is to decide how much, if any, of the lake you want to clear and commit to the shot. If you cannot carry your second over 185 metres with complete confidence then a second layup shot with a long iron or hybrid should get you close enough to play a 9 or wedge to the green but take care not to pull the ball left on your layup as bunkers await just short of the water.
Remember that many amateurs quit on the layup shot and often attempt to steer it because they are unsure of the either the distance they need or how well they might hit it and this can result in a slice, shank or duff so take a club you know will get you the right distance and make a full, committed shot. |
